If the egg went in the water then the egg will get bigger because it absorbs all of the water and that is called diffusion. If you put the egg in the corn syrup then it will shrink because it is basically taking parts of the egg away. That is what Diffusion and Osmosis is.
Materials
In our experiment we used:
Corn Syrup
4 Eggs
A Scale
Vinegar
Table salt
Food Coloring
3 Containers
Water
Procedure
We weighed them before doing anything with them.
Place the eggs in vinegar for 3 days.
Then we took the eggs out after the 3 days.
We next weighed all 4 eggs from what they weighed from before to what they weigh now.
The eggs were then placed in all of their different pastes. (figure 2)
The 1st egg went into corn syrup, the 2nd egg went into water, and the 3rd one went into salt water and left them for a while.
Then we took the eggs out of the containers.
We next weighed them again to see the weight comparison.
They all changed in weight.
Observations
We removed all the eggs from the vinegar ad they all had no shell. Before we put them in the vinegar they all had a mass of 65 grams. After we took them out they all weighed at 96 g. They all appeared larger than a regular egg afterword. (figure 1, 2, and 3)
Eggs:
1st Mass
2nd Mass
3rd Mass
Egg # 1
89 Grams
39 Grams
86 Grams
Egg # 2
90 Grams
94 Grams
94 Grams
Egg # 3
97 Grams
98 Grams
74 Grams
Conclusion
In this experiment I learned how the eggs will shrink and expand in different kinds of solutions like corn syrup, water, and salt water. It is very exciting how they would go back and forth from small to big. Also it was interesting how they were opened up after all of these different solutions we used for them.
Relevance
The reason why Osmosis keeps us alive is because our cells keep moving and generating to get rid of waste for our body's to move.
